HOLYOKE— A man was shot following a fight in the South Holyoke section of the city early Saturday morning.

Holyoke police Capt. Denise Duguay, commander of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, described the victim as a Springfield resident in his early 30s.

Duguay said a 911 call at 2:18 a.m. reported shots fired at the intersection of Jackson and South Summer streets, and that a person may have been injured. She said when officers arrived at the scene, they did not find a shooting victim. Within minutes, however, a second call reported that a person with gunshot wounds was brought to a local emergency room by friends.

Duguay said witnesses told police that the victim and another man apparently had an altercation the scene, and the assailant shot the victim as they stood in the street. While police are continuing to investigate the incident, Duguay said preliminary information suggests that the altercation was a continuation of a dispute that started somewhere else before ending at the shooting scene.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Holyoke Police Criminal Investigation Bureau at 322-6940.
