West Springfield police: Tips generated by surveillance image of pizza shop break-in suspect lead to arrest

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Tips generated from a surveillance image of a man suspected of breaking into a Main Street pizza shop earlier this month led his arrest Tuesday.

The suspect, 19-year-old Carlos Almanzar of Ridgewood, N.Y., turned himself into West Springfield police on Tuesday, detective Matthew Mattina said.

The break-in to Star Pizza, 707 Main St., was reported on the morning of Aug. 1. The suspect pushed in an air conditioner to gain entry and his image was caught on a surveillance camera as he reached up to destroy it.

That image, released to the media, generated a number of tips, Mattina said. The suspect, perhaps spooked by an alarm, fled without taking anything. He caused, however, substantial damage to the property.

Almanzar was charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime and malicious destruction of property over $250
